Renee's Independent Study 2025

My interest in the effects of implicit bias and its far-reaching impact on society began in my sophomore year. I began an independent study examining the spectrum of explicit and implicit biases, tracing their historical origins, institutional racism, and enduring consequences. My final project explored how stereotypes operate within this spectrum, investigated the early developmental roots of unconscious bias in childhood, and concluded with an analysis of its modern-day implications—particularly in education, healthcare, and employment. The goal was to offer a clear-eyed, impartial glimpse into the society we are still striving to build.

In my junior year, I deepened my focus by examining implicit bias specifically within the medical field. My project centered around three key components: historical context, expert interviews, and future research proposals. This work culminated in an interactive virtual museum that allows viewers to explore each section of the research in an engaging and accessible format.

I am deeply grateful to my independent study advisor, Mrs. De la Guardia, whose guidance shaped the foundation of my research. I also wish to thank Alison Pasquariello, Dr. Mahzarin Banaji, and Dr. Janice Sabin—whose groundbreaking work in cognitive science and health equity, and whose encouragement throughout this process, provided invaluable insight and inspiration.
